Handle With Care

Moving with Children:

A move can be especially trying for children.  It is important that you get them involved so that they do not feel displaced, as children like routines and moving will definitely disrupt what’s familiar to them.  Speak to your children and have them discuss their fears and concerns.  Help them get excited about moving.  Let them get involved in packing up their items and put them in a special box.  All these things will alleviate some of their stress about moving to a new place.

It’s best not to have your children at home on loading day, as they may become upset that their things are going on the truck.  We suggest that they spend the day with family or friends to minimize their anxiety about the move.  Proper planning will assist your children in the transition to your new home and community.

Moving with Pets and Plants:

Pets are also affected by a move.  Pets cannot be moved on the moving truck, so be sure that for their own safety, they are not around on moving day.  Be sure that you’ve arranged for the transporting of your pet.  You might want to visit your veterinarian to obtain pet health records, update tags, and get tranquilizers to calm your pet during transport.

Also, if your pet will be traveling by air, be sure to contact the airlines to find out their rules about moving pets and what type of kennel is required.  Some airlines even rent these kennels.  Be sure that the kennel is labeled with your new address, phone and pet’s name and include any special handling instructions.  If you’re traveling by car, be sure to never leave your pet unattended, especially during extremely hot or cold temperatures.

In general, plants should not be moved.  We cannot be responsible for the care of plants, and many states quarantine plants at all times.  We recommend that they move with you, and not on the Bekins truck.

Packing For Your Move

If you decide to pack yourself, be sure to use the correct packing materials needed to protect your possessions.  This will alleviate any damage during transit.  Bekins recommends using various sized cartons for specific items.

Book Cartons (1.5 cu ft.) are small, easy to handle cartons designed for heavy items like books, CD’s, and DVD’s.  Be sure not to overload the carton, as it may become too heavy for handling.  Be sure to individually wrap any very old or valuable books.

Medium Cartons (3 cu. ft.) have a wide range of uses for smaller items throughout your home.  This size box is ideal for small appliances, tools, non-perishable food or clothing.  Packing similar items together will make unpacking easier.

Large Cartons (4.5 cu. ft. to 6.5 cu. ft.) are very useful for packing light weight, bulky items such as pillows, linens and large toys.

Dishpacks are especially sturdy cartons for fragile items such as china, glassware, figurines and sculptures.  These cartons are reinforced with cellular inserts to further protect items such as crystal stemware.  Each carton should be labeled “Fragile-This end up” to avoid damage.

Upright Cartons are used for lamps, statues and other items that require a special size.

Wardrobe Boxes are “portable” closets used to move your clothing from your closet.  Clothing remains on hangers so that they stay wrinkle-free and clean.

Mirror/Picture Cartons are specially designed telescoping cartons that fit mirrors, pictures and glass tabletops exactly.  Each carton has heavy corrugated braces that reinforce each corner.

Mattress Cartons are available from crib to king mattress sizes and they will protect mattresses and box springs from dirt and tearing and help to provide structural support to avoid bending.

Packing Paper should be unprinted and is used for wrapping and padding.

Packing & Materials Continued:

Bekins’ professional packing services offer you convenience and peace of mind.  Our packers are trained in packing methods to alleviate any damage during transit.  We offer a full range of packing services from the complete packing of all items in your home, to partial packing services.  Or, you may want us to pack your fragile items like china, glassware, mirrors or artwork.

Whatever your packing needs, we can assist.  We know how important it is to you that your goods arrive at your new home safely and without damage.  The correct packing of your household goods will ensure that they remain safe during transit.

Whether you use Bekins’ packing services or if you decide to pack on your own, it is important to plan and organize.  Plan to pack only items that you will use in your new home.  Don’t pack items that you’ve been planning to get rid of-donate them to charity before you move.

Please be aware that your electronic equipment may require special preparation.  Be sure to detach all cords and wires and keep them in a labeled bag so that you know where they belong.  When moving computers, scanners or printers, be sure to detach cords and wires, paper trays, etc, and label all cables and wires for easy re-assembly.  Be sure to use well padded, sturdy cartons to cushion the equipment.  Mark these items “fragile”.  Large screen televisions will require extra padding and protection.  If possible, pack it in its original carton.  If these cartons are not available, consider crating the item prior to moving day.

When you pack your items, consider the floor plan of your new home so that you organize your items based on the rooms that they will be placed in upon delivery.  This will make the unpacking process more efficient.  And remember, dispose of any hazardous items such as cleaning supplies, solvents, paint, aerosol cans, flammables or ammunition.  They simply cannot be moved.

We also recommend that you don’t pack furs, jewelry, precious stones or metals, important personal documents, valuable collections, stocks and bonds or cash.  These special items are invaluable to you, so do not pack them for the truck, but be sure to take them with you.
